It's all about the ribbons!

Begun Monday, March 28th,:
AS I sit here at the Missouri State Leadership Conference Member and Program Recognition ceremony tonight waiting for the session to begin, I am reflecting upon Seneca FCCLA's transformation over last few years. I specifically remember two things about State Conference 2008. One thing that changed the direction of our program. Another thing that is a benchmark (for me) of a societal shift in attitude about mobile technology and educational use of social media.

Recruit, Retain, Recognize:
REMEMBERING the meeting several springs back, we had watched and applauded as chapter after chapter received recognition for National Programs that WE had done.
Continued April 2: Why didn't we receive recognition? I knew it wasn't because the State office was supposed to be omniscient, it was because I was missing something. I sat during that recognition session determined to get to the bottom of the awards and ribbons that other chapters were receiving. I sat with my Motorola Razor texting emails to myself in the dark the names of the Programs or other chapter awards and accomplishments that we could be receiving! My goal was not to try to get every single ribbon or award available, but to get recognition for what we were doing and then strive to add one more program a year if possible! I am happy to note that we now do turn in the appropriate documentation for our efforts to be recognized. As a small chapter, small school and one teacher department, we may not have the huge National Program events and results as the national winners, but we complete as many National Programs as we can fit into our Program of Work. ! We try to have as much fun as we can and students strive to become leaders. We NOW get the ribbons!!! It's not a competition. We're not trying to get more than anyone else-- just more.

WHICH brings me to the second revelation sitting in this year's session. How things have changed in just a few short years. At the time I was sitting in that session texting myself, unbeknownst to me, the evening's keynote speaker was sitting right behind me as the awards were being displayed. I was appalled as about halfway through his talk he berated the teachers tonite who had their cell phones out when they supposedly tell students not to! My face turned red in embarrassment and then --I was mad. He didn't know what I was doing with my phone! He had no way of knowing that I was taking notes in the dark so that I could improve my program. He assumed without even asking. I also felt that he made a major error in knocking the very advisors who had brought the youth to hear him, the only positive adults in some of these kids' lives and I immediately tuned him out for the rest of his talk! Oooo, I feel myself getting all worked up again. But really, the whole POINT of my writing this is my own personal mark in time of the shift in use of technology, especially mobile technology. I am proud to have been already using my mobile device in a way that I now use my iPhone daily. Oh that could be another post, the use of mobile technology in the classroom!

MISSOURI FCCLA is known for the use of technology, the attempt to be ahead of the curve in embracing the changes that are coming. Thank you to Christine Hollingsworth for pushing Missouri advisors to be front-runners in FCS and FCCLA. We will miss you in Missouri but you will ROCK at National FCCLA. Oh yeah, I know that FCS and Home Ec have always been about new tools and products (vacuum cleaners instead rug beaters and microwaves). But for some reason this generation, MY generation is trying to teach in a way that is archaic. So many other teachers I run across still gripe about email and online gradebooks. Some of the FCS teachers don't want to be bothered to learn new, even try. REALLY? I have begun to introduce web tools to colleagues at my high school and I hope to continue. I am glad I am not stagnating or quitting.

Rock-A-Thon 2011

Tonite (this morning) is the annual Rock-A-Thon to benefit Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. This year we have a smaller group but we are rockin' away.

We made homemade pizza at 2:30am.

Brownies are in the oven at 4:15am.

We are staying up all night long at school! Gettin' a little tired:

Tradition. Pride. Class.

Where would we be without Tradition, Pride, and Class?

Last year we celebrated the 25th anniversary of "Tradition. Pride. Class." as motto for our school, our district, our community.

Originally uttered by Coach Hodge for the football program, it has come to emulate a way of life for us.

With all the negative press and finger pointing our little hamlet has received this past year, especially the high school, I started thinking about what would happen if we removed those goals/designations/hopes?

So this is what I came up with:

Tradition: Without Traditions, we would forget, neglect and things would become shabby, both in appearance and in spirit, nothing to hope for, we would no longer "belong" to events and "ways" that are special, exclusive to our people. We lose our Heritage, who we ARE!

Pride: Without PRIDE, we would be in disgrace. We would be second rate, no reason to try. We would lose our dignity, tarnished. We would produce junk, both in people and in product.

Class: Without CLASS we become tacky, crass (course, unsophisticated). Gruff, dirty, crude, rude, rough, vulgar, cheap, gross, unrefined, get the drift?

So take a look at synonyms for Tradition, Pride, Class and embrace them, embody them, promote them. They ARE Seneca!!!

TRADITION: Attitude. Belief. Custom. Legend. Inheritance. Heritage.

PRIDE: Esteem. Honor. Respect. Dignity. Regard. Worth. Fine.

CLASS: Elegant. Excellent. Superior. Noble .Gentle. Worthy.

In FCCLA, we can act out the honorable traditions that have gone before us, we can take pride in our goals and actions, and we can behave with dignity and class.

Oh The Places We Went with FCCLA

and Reporter for the Seneca Moccasin Print.

This article is to appear in the Summer edition of the Seneca High School Moccasin Print newspaper.

This year was probably one of the busiest the Seneca Chapter of Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America.

Our theme this year was “Oh, the Places You’ll Go with Seneca FCCLA”. The officers started off the year with a bang by having a Summer Planning Meeting a few days before school started at the advisor’s, Mrs. Herbert’s, home—in which they discussed rules and guidelines of conduct they as officers were to follow, as well as gathering some ideas for the upcoming year.

At Open House, they handed out cupcakes to celebrate 100 years of Family and Consumer Sciences education, as well as fliers advertising for FCCLA.

In September, a large portion of the members went to the Leadership Planning Meeting held in Carthage. While they were there, the students separated into groups and brought back ideas and information that they learned on a variety of things: including how to perform well on a STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) event, information on cystic fibrosis and the problems of “sexting”, as well as potential college information for those pursuing the FACS fields.

In October, the members also helped STUCO host the Senior Citizen’s banquet—while STUCO prepared the food, FCCLA members helped serve the seniors who attended.

Also in October, four members went to Access FCCLA held in the Tan-Tar-A resort at Lake of the Ozarks. Trevor , Michelle, Shelby, and Elizabethwere divided into three groups, and brought back information on how they could all be leaders in their community, as well as ideas for more student involvement.

One different aspect of FCCLA this year was that it became a class: there were many freshmen admitted into the club due to them taking FCCLA Leadership held in third hour. The students were required to join FCCLA, complete Power of Ones—self motivating activities—participate in a STAR event, and help come up with their own plans on how to help the community. This class helped FCCLA reach one of its highest memberships on record.

Every year, FCCLA sponsors a non-profit organization that helps the community. This year, our primary focus was Children’s Miracle Network. FCCLA helped the whole school become involved by hosting the Advisory Pizza Party contest this year—in which the advisory class that raised the most money would win a pizza party for lunch. With that motivation, the students—as well as some adults—altogether donated $750, in which FCCLA as a whole also donated $250 to make it an even $1000 to our local sponsor for CMN.

In February, seven members also participated in a Rock-A-Thon to raise money for the organization, in which they had to have $50 in donations and/or at least 5 sponsors to attend. They stayed up all night rocking in rocking chairs from 10 pm to 8 am. (adding another $659 to the CMN total).

At the end of March, Kat, Michelle, Breann, and Trevorall attended the State Convention in Columbia. Kat and Michelle participated in a STAR event called Chapter Showcase Manual, in which they showed judges a scrapbook-like manual over everything that they had accomplished this year. The girls were awarded silver. Breann went as a voting delegate, and Trevor went as a youth consultant for STAR Events.

Congratulations to all of the members for their accomplishments that this year, and here’s to hoping for an even more involved year next year. Next year’s members will have to beat this record.

Guest post by Mrs. Herbert's favorite T.A. of the year, and Chapter Secretary/Reporter, Michelle Starr.

Wow! That would be the defining word I would use to describe State. The conference started with a bang as the State Officers performed a cute skit dressed up as Disney Characters on Sunday Night. What followed was one of the most motivating speakers I have ever heard, Aaron Davis. Now, if you have the chance, you really need to look this guy up on the internet. Not only was he hilarious, but he was inspiring when the conversation turned serious. The whole experience of the night before made me really hopeful about the events to come tomorrow...until I started to practice with Kat. I was rehearsing in my sleep because I was so nervous. (We ended up performing okay, and I hope we at least get Silver.)

The following pictures are of tonight's activities: our recognition (which is why we are wearing the ribbons), and our fun night of singing and dancing (yes, even our favorite "thriller" Mrs. Herbert moved a little on the dance floor...talk to one of us students at school or ask Mrs. H for the inside joke)

Our name was on several lists of activities we were recognized for, such as Families First, Career Connection, FACTS, Student Body, etc.;

Breann and I are recognized as one of the 200 people able to attend State who completed all five Powers of One.

Us again, a slightly clearer picture;

It's all about the ribbons...hence the subtitle (I had the most...sorry I'm a bit proud right now. We all did very well, and if Kat wasn't with me up on the Star Events presentation I would've choked horribly.);

We throw our hands in the ai-a-air with Ron Cole as our keynote entertainer. It was absolutely amazing and fun. There wasn't one dull moment at all;

A "thumbs up" for our time at conference;

We're all smiles...even ones who dislike the camera (Trevor);

Dory and Nemo; guess which one is which correctly and you win a prize...guessing correctly;

Well...you can't be prepared for everything (I'm talking about our expressions haha);

Trevor suddenly became a ladies man...who knew?;

Kat and Mrs. H sharing a smile;

All of us together. I wouldn't change a thing about conference...well, I could've been amazingly prepared, that would've been helpful;

All in all, although we almost didn't make it because of the weather, the trip and dedication we had this year was worth it. I honestly wish everyone could've been able to make it up here, you would've had the time of your lives.

Our activities for 2010 FCCLA Week:

Students from Seneca FCCLA started out FCCLA Week by displaying 8 posters around the school each stating one of the FCCLA purposes. Each day an FCCLA logo is hidden somewhere in the school with a hint read over the intercom after the pledge. The student who finds the logo turns it in for a box of Valentine candy. Tuesday is Member Appreciation day with ice cream sundaes for members at lunch. Wednesday is Teacher Appreciation with members bringing baked goods for the staff. Thursday is delivery of the Valentine Crushes sold all week with the proceeds going to CMN.

We're coming to the end of programs and activities for the 2010 School Year at Seneca FCCLA.

Oh, sure, we still have lots of fun to come,

but for events that will receive/earn recognition,

time is running out.

If you are competing in State STAR Events,

Practice, Practice, Practice!!!

All members who have complete all 5 units

of Power of One

and want State and National Recognition,

it is time to fill out the Recognition Application.

Power of One Units:

Power of One gives youth the POWER to fulfill their dreams by creating self-directed projects that focus on:

A Better You — Improve personal traits
Family Ties — Get along better with family members
Working on Working — Explore work options, prepare for a career, or sharpen
Take the Lead — Develop leadership qualities
Speak Out for FCCLA — Tell others about positive experiences in FCCLA.

All members of the FCCLA Leadership Class should have already completed all 5 Power of One Units.

The deadline to fill out, print out and get the summary to

Mrs. H is February 22.

Your completed Power of One forms should be in the Power of One binder,

and if you have been keeping up with filling out the Summary Form,

it should be a piece of cake to just type what you already wrote on to the online form and then print it out.

The forms need to be signed by Mrs. H and mailed to State

or you will be out of luck.

They stayed for about an hour.

They actually worked in my room a little,

spiffing things up like they used to.

Ate some pizza, of course.

It was a blast to catch up with them.

It was just as if they were still in our chapter!

just a reminder about appropriate Business Casual dress. So I've reposted this from September:

It's important that we understand how to dress for success.

Some of these examples could be considered business dress

and some business casual.

For our Career Presentations and for FCCLA,

business casual never includes

jeans, tee shirts, tennies or flip flops.

Attire must be neat and clean and presentable.

Kat & Michelle, officers of the Seneca FCCLA

(Family Career and Community Leaders of

America) recently presented Kathy Watson,

CMN Coordinator at Freeman Hospital,

with a BIG $1000 check

for Children's Miracle Network.

The money was raised by students through a

contest fundraiser organized by FCCLA among advisory classes at Seneca

High School. The winning advisory class enjoyed a pizza party.

FCCLA is donating all remaining hot chocolate and cappuccino profits to this

CMN fund,

along with donations through a Rock-a-Thon lock in the chapter is

hosting on Feb. 5

and Crush Valentines sales for FCCLA Week.

All funds stay local.

Missouri FCCLA 2010 State Leadership Conference

The Points Contest for attending 2010 State Leadership Conference free is heating up. Michelle just passed up Trevor for the top spot!! A sure way to get to State Conference is to bypass the Points Contest and go to State STAR events!!!

As you enjoy your Christmas Break, spend some time polishing your project and oral presentation in order to be the best it can be.

Missouri Legislative Shadowing

It's that time of year again to apply for Legislative Shadowing.

Last year our current Chapter President Breann was priveleged to go and had a wonderful time!

Legislative Shadowing is provided by our Missouri State FCCLA.

Our State Advisor and State Staff procure a special grant that provides funding for this event.

It is held in Jefferson City February 23 and 24.

The State FCCLA website has this to say:

Missouri FCCLA members in their junior or senior years of high school who have an interest in public policy, laws and its relation to families, careers and communities are encouraged to apply for a day of job shadowing in the Missouri General Assembly. Up to 50 FCCLA members may be chosen for this program. Applications are available through the state web site and due January 15. This program is funded through Missouri FCCLA membership dues and contributions from the Missouri Educators of Family and Consumer Sciences (MoEFACS).

Our local Chapter will take applications through December 15. After that date a panel of teachers/administrators will peruse the apps and choose the 2 applicatants from our school.

So hurry and get the application and let's GO!!!

Oh I sure hope we can send representatives again this year.

We just finished up our Pizza Party/Children's Miracle Network Fundraising Drive for the FCCLA National Service Project.

Children's Miracle Network is close to my heart as my eldest was the CMN Champion for the San Diego Children's Hospital back in 1996.

Our FCCLA members chose to do a Pizza Party Contest, the Advisory class at our high school that raised the most per student will win a Pizza Party on December 1st. Well...

I still haven't announced which Advisory class won, but will tomorrow. Our students and staff really came through. $730 was raised! Another staff member chose to add the $20 to bring the total up to $750. Then, at the suggestion of the FCCLA officers, our FCCLA members unanimously voted to use Chapter funds (raised for outings and housing for FCCLA trips) to add another $250 to make our Chapter donation an even cool Grand!!!

I am so proud of my student members and leadership.

Operation Christmas Child

Samaritan's Purse staff and partners plan to hand-deliver some 8 million shoe box gifts to hurting children in more than 100 countries on six continents. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has hand-delivered more than 69 million shoe box gifts to needy children around the world.

We want to Be Part of It too! For the 5 years I have been advisor at our school, FCCLA students have continued the tradition begun I don't know how many years ago by previous FCCLA/FHA members and Mrs. Hill, former advisor.

Thursday November 5th at 5pm we will meet at the WalMart Food entrance to shop together for Operation Christmas Child. You will need to bring money to purchase the gifts that will go inside your box.

You can either bring a shoebox or buy a plastic box at the store. Our FCCLA will pay the $7 shipping cost, one box per member. You can choose to fill as many boxes as you like, but only one shipping fee per member.

After we are finished shopping, we will head over to El Charro to eat dinner together, again, you'll need to bring your own money.

Participation is entirely voluntary. Operation Christmas Child is a religious outreach and participation is in no way required. It was begun by the son of world famous evangelist Billy Graham to reach out to children around the world.

So please join us if you can. If Thursday night does not work for you, you are more than welcome to shop and fill a box on your own and bring it in in the next week.

If you like, you may wrap your box, but please wrap the top and bottom separately, placing the label on the lid.

Children's Miracle Network

This week begins the Children's Miracle Network campaign for our FCCLA chapter.

Children's Miracle Network was founded in 1983 by Marie Osmond ("Donny & Marie", "The Osmond Family") and John Schneider ("The Dukes of Hazzard" TV show) to raise money to buy expensive, specialized medical equipment for Children's Hospitals.

To date CMN has raised over 3.2 BILLION dollars and hosts a telethon each May.

This year FCCLA has joined with Children's Miracle Network to form the DIG IT! Project.

Every year 17 million sick and injured children are treated thanks
to the 170 plus Children's Miracle Network hospitals across America.

In 1993, my eldest daughter was one of these children, requiring emergency brain surgery the second week of her freshman year of high school. Other children in our community have benefited from our CMN hospital, Freeman West in Joplin. some have been LifeFlighted to Children's Mercy in KC.

FCCLA will help Children’s Miracle Network in their endeavors to
insure that no child is turned away from the help they need,
regardless of their ability to pay. FCCLA will directly assist in saving
lives while partnering with the world’s largest nonprofit for children.

FCCLA's CMN campaign has its own special celebrity spokesman, Simon Curtis! Star of Nickelodeon's Spectacular! Simon was diagnosed with Leukemia at age 10.

And Monti Montanez, senior member of Menudo, has composed and sings a special song just for CMN, "My Dreams", featured in the video below. Additionally, members of Menudo will be visiting various CMN Hospitals throughout the year to further promote Children's Miracle Network.

Next week each of the 6500+ FCCLA chapters will receive an informational/promotional packet about the upcoming DigIt campaign for
Children's Miracle Network.

We will be participating in this promotion and will share with the chapter as soon as we have a chance to look it over.
But here's a sneak peek at the project:

"This truly unique campaign raises money for the amazing Children’s Miracle Network. The campaign leaders consist of 7,000 FCCLA chapters across the country. In the spring of 2010 and 2011, FCCLA will encourage members to sell a sponsorship for the growth of a flower. On a specified day, all students will deliver the flowers they grew to sick children in their local community hospitals. Each sponsor will receive a free packet of Dig It! flower seeds and may choose to participate with FCCLA. A sponsorship will cost $5, with proceeds going to the children’s hospital nearest each participating chapter."

New Texting Law

As of today it is illegal in the State of Missouri for a driver under the age of 21 to write, read or send a text while driving.

Fundraiser and Paperwork

FCCLA Members:

Our annual Membership Drive is under way.

We are once again selling Courtney's Candles

(16oz size )

to help you raise money for your dues.

Hurry to get your form, orders are due (with money) September 1st!

If you sell 7 candles, your dues are completely paid. (all or nothing)

If you sell 15 candles, your FCCLA tee is paid for.

If you sell 25 candles, you can get an FCCLA hoodie.

If you have already paid your dues, talk to Mrs. H about using your candles sales to help pay for trips.

If your dues are paid by September 10th, you are eligible to go to the Leadership Training in Carthage on Sept 17th! It's all day.*

Be sure to ask Mrs H for a travel permission form.

*As long as your are eligible to leave school for the day.

Miracle Treat Day and the First Day of School!

On Thursday, August 13, 2009, all participating Dairy Queen®, DQ® Treat Center and DQ® Grill & Chill® locations in the United States and Canada will once again donate proceeds from every Blizzard® Treat sold to Children’s Miracle Network.

Thursday, August 13th is also the first day of school.
Okay, okay, overkill, I know you know that.
However, I am making you an offer you hopefully won't refuse.

On the first day of school, after school, if you have paid your FCCLA dues by the time I am ready to leave Dairy Queen, I will personally, (not FCCLA monies, but ME... I will), buy you a small Blizzard at our local Dairy Queen.
I will meet you there at 4:10 pm and will stay until 4:30 or so.
This is a one time offer.
It will ruin my diet, but hey, I'm sacrificing for YOU!

PS: Did you know that my eldest is a CMN Champion? You'll find out more as the year goes on.

Did you know that school starts Thursday?

I have some requests for you:

If you can, come help at Open House on Monday Night,
6-7:30pm
we'll be handing out FCCLA fliers.
PLEASE wear an FCCLA shirt!

If you can come Monday at noon, we'll be baking mini-cupcakes.

We will hit the ground running with Member Recruitment.

There are some Member Drive incentives that we will introduce
at the first meeting
(whenever Mrs. Fox lets us know Club Days for this year).

There will be incentives for:

paying your dues during August
recruiting new members
being active in other forms of member recruitment.

If you visit our FACS/FCCLA blog (that means THIS blog) and post a comment about an entry, I will give you 1 point extra credit for the quarter.

Of course, no fair going back and commenting on every post just so you don't have to do your classwork. The comment must be timely, within a week of the original post, relevant and appropriate and have your first name and last initial (class hour if your name is common).

FCCLA: It’s not your Momma’s FHA!

Some of you may hear your Mom or Grandma talking about the “good ol’ days” of Future Homemakers of America (FHA). Well, it’s still around, sort of. Now it’s in the form of Family, Career, and Community Leaders or America, or FCCLA. The focus is still on the family, but the new name explains that we aren’t just homemakers, we are all about leadership in all facets of life.
In FCCLA we focus on leadership activities, develop leadership skills, and learn how to apply them to our families, careers and community. There are opportunities for individual self-directed projects, event leadership, community service leadership, international exchange, legislative shadowing, state and national conference delegations, competitive event participation and local, regional, state and national leadership.
Just so you know guys, this is NOT an all girls’ club! Guys are more than welcome to join. In fact, more guys elevate to state and national leadership positions proportionally than girls. In order to join FCCLA, all you need to do is be enrolled in a FACS course (currently or in the past) and then pay your dues.
There are so many great activities and experiences, who wouldn’t want to join?
